The principles behind our practice
Moerlina has a 50 year history of providing child centred progressive education in WA. Our culture and approach to learning is intentional and has been carefully crafted over decades to create the best learning environment for the children in our care. We have distilled our approach into a set of principles that guide us. They are standards we live by — guiding our culture, actions, and values every day.
The moment you step into Moerlina, you notice something different.
There is a sense of calm. You can feel it in the interactions with students, educators, and parents. Unlike many schools that often have a frenetic energy, Moerlina has a calm and gentle rhythm, where all members of the Moerlina community understand this rhythm and know what is expected of them to maintain it. Calmness and clarity are superpowers for learning. They allow everybody to get on with the job of learning and teaching without distraction, disruption or confusion.
This culture is not accidental. It has been carefully crafted over decades through clear expectations, purposeful structures, and a deep understanding of how positive learning environments are created and sustained.
“From the class structures to the pace of the day, there’s a beautiful rhythm in how the school operates. You can see that the systems are set up to meet each child where they are, to stretch them just enough, and to make sure they feel inspired, not overwhelmed, to grow.”
Cristina Londono, Parent
Moerlina is a ‘smart school’ centred on deep learning, academic rigour, and evidence-informed practice. It brings together creativity, lateral thinking, innovation, and scientific inquiry in a way that prepares children for a complex and changing world.
Learning is never about surface understanding, rote memorisation, or box-ticking. It is about depth — exploring ideas thoroughly, thinking critically, and developing a genuine understanding of concepts that matter.
“Critical thinking isn’t an aspiration at Moerlina, it’s alive. You see it in the deep, thoughtful questions the children ask, in the time they’re given to explore a topic, craft a story, or investigate an idea not for the sake of a checkbox, but for the joy of truly grasping something with wonder.”

There is a shared belief among students and educators that meaningful learning takes time. It is in the slowing down, the questioning, and the sustained engagement with ideas that real understanding is formed. Learning is active, engaging, and deeply connected to the real world.
Educators hold one of the most important roles in society, shaping the minds, imaginations, and futures of children. At Moerlina, we believe children thrive when educators thrive.
Our educators are more than teachers. They are mentors, guides, and visionaries who inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. We are a community of deeply passionate educators, committed to continual learning and professional growth. We invest in our development, collaborate closely, and bring deep expertise to our practice. We are reframing education together and ensuring educators are recognised and valued for their expertise and their contribution to society. Every child is known deeply, and challenged — that’s why low student–educator ratios matter.
“Moerlina is everything that I have advocated education should be. It is a place where all children and educators are celebrated, valued and encouraged to grow. I feel privileged to work here.”

By creating the conditions for educators to flourish, we create the conditions for children to flourish. Our educators build learning environments where students feel supported, inspired, and empowered to grow.
Culture is one of Moerlina’s greatest strengths.
It is intentional, long-standing, and fiercely protected. Everyone who is part of this community knows that this culture is rare and important. It is the foundation that allows children to thrive.
At the heart of this culture is trust.
Trust is foundational for effective communication, learning and meaningful connection. It gives children the confidence to take risks, ask questions, make mistakes, and discover who they are. It empowers educators to lead with creativity, professionalism, and purpose.
“Experiencing belonging is integral to human existence. We are all better for being a part of this community we call school.”
Wendy Gorman, Educator
Long-standing traditions, a progressive educational philosophy, and a deep commitment to child development are woven into the fabric of Moerlina. There is a strong sense of collective responsibility, where students, educators, and families all play a role in maintaining a culture where people are valued, empowered, and inspired to contribute something meaningful.
High expectations are central to Moerlina’s philosophy. Students and educators are encouraged to approach each day with curiosity, purpose, and a commitment to continual growth. We hold high expectations because we know children thrive when they are challenged to extend themselves. Rather than competing with others, students are encouraged to discover their strengths, build confidence, and pursue their own potential.
Children are naturally driven to inquire, create, explore, and master new ideas. We nurture these qualities by celebrating individuality, encouraging reflection, and helping students take ownership of their learning. This philosophy is grounded in resilience, perseverance, intentionality, and growth — valuing progress, character, and effort over perfection or external validation.
“The most rewarding part of my role as a teacher is watching children realise how much they are capable of.”
Kati Laaksonen, Year 3–4 Teacher
