Low student–teacher ratios
At Moerlina, small classes are central to the way we teach and the experience we create for children. With fewer children to share their attention, educators have greater opportunity to know each child, respond to individual needs and interests, and support learning at the right level. Combined with our multi-age classrooms, this creates a connected learning community where children can grow in confidence, learn from one another and feel genuinely known, supported and challenged.
Early years matter
Early years matter. This is when children begin to discover themselves as learners—developing confidence, curiosity, and a sense of what it means to learn.
With fewer children in each class, teachers have more opportunity to get to know each child, recognise their individual needs and provide the encouragement and support that helps them thrive. Children have more opportunities to ask questions, explore ideas, build relationships and experience the small successes that grow confidence over time.
At Moerlina, we believe these early experiences matter. By giving children the time, attention and support they need, we help lay the foundations for a positive, lifelong relationship with learning.
A Different Student–Teacher Ratio
Western Australian public primary schools have the highest student–teacher ratio in Australia, averaging 15.2 students per teacher, compared with the national average of 13.7. Moerlina takes a different approach, with a much lower student–educator ratio. This gives educators greater capacity to know children well, respond to individual needs and provide personalised support. It’s not simply about having fewer children in a classroom; it’s about creating the conditions for more individual attention and meaningful learning.

Genuinely Known, Not Just Managed
For children, a teacher can be one of the first significant adults outside their family to make them feel truly seen and understood. It means more than knowing how they are progressing academically. It means understanding what makes them tick — what worries them, how they learn, when they need encouragement and what lights them up. Small classes give our educators greater opportunities to build these deeper connections, helping children feel understood, valued and confident to be themselves.
MULTI-AGE LEARNING
At Moerlina, multi-age learning is a deliberate educational choice, reflecting how people learn and grow together in families and communities. Children learn alongside peers of different ages, with learning shaped around their individual readiness, interests and needs rather than their year level alone. Younger children learn from older peers, while older children deepen their understanding by sharing knowledge and taking on leadership. Over time, children develop confidence, empathy and independence, building a strong sense of connection and belonging.

What the Research Says?
Research into class size suggests that smaller classes can support more responsive teaching, particularly by creating greater opportunities for interaction, feedback and flexible grouping.
The impact is therefore not simply about having fewer children in a room. It is about creating the conditions for a different kind of teaching and learning.
At Moerlina, small classes support our commitment to knowing each child, responding to individual differences and creating a learning environment where children can participate, ask questions and develop their capabilities.
What Small Classes Really Give Children
Ultimately, the value of small classes is found in the everyday experiences they make possible.
It is the teacher who notices when a child is ready for a new challenge. The reassurance that helps a child persevere when learning feels difficult. The opportunity to ask a question, share an idea or discover a new interest. The confidence that grows when children know their contributions matter.
These moments may seem small, but together they help shape how children see themselves, how they relate to others and how they approach learning.
At Moerlina, small classes help create the time, space and relationships for every child to be known, to grow and to thrive.

“Moerlina is such an inviting and engaging space. The activities are very considered and conducive to immersive learning. I notice my son’s language, socialisation, and confidence have increased tremendously, and I enjoy the socialisation with other parents.”
